FAQs
What vehicles qualify as Classic Vehicles?
A motor vehicle, motorcycle, or trailer qualifies if it is model year 1982 or older and is driven fewer than 1,500 miles per calendar year.
Will my current vintage vehicle registration change on October 1, 2026?
While vintage vehicles will no longer exist, your current registration will be valid as issued until the time of your next registration renewal or change.
Do I need to take action before my registration renewal?
No special action is required solely because the designation is changing. Continue using your current registration until it is time to renew.
Will I have to pay the $40 initial Classic Vehicle registration fee when my existing vintage vehicle converts?
No. Existing vehicles that are already registered as vintage vehicles will convert to Classic Vehicle status, if applicable, without being charged the initial Classic Vehicle registration fee.
Do I have to surrender my Vintage Vehicle Plate?
No. While Vintage Vehicle plates are no longer issued, you can continue to own and operate with said plate as long as you own the vehicle. Vintage Vehicle plates cannot be transferred to other owners or vehicles.
If I have a current Vintage Vehicle that is 1983 and newer, what kind of registration will I have when I next renew?
If you do not qualify for the Classic Vehicle program, you will receive a standard vehicle registration.
Is there a mileage limit?
Yes. A qualifying Classic motor vehicle or motorcycle must be driven fewer than 1,500 miles per calendar year.
Can I still renew my registration via REX or OTS?
Yes. Your vehicle registration will automatically be designated “Classic” or “Standard” based upon the year of your vehicle.
If I have a currently registered Vintage Vehicle that is 1982 or older, will I need to complete the TC 746?
No. Only first time registration will require TC 746.
Will I need to certify that my Classic Vehicle is safe to drive?
Yes. First time Classic Vehicle registrations must provide a signed statement, TC 746, certifying that the vehicle is safe to operate on Utah highways. The vehicle’s original equipment must be in good operating condition, or it must have been replaced with equal or more efficient equipment in good working order.
Do I still need to complete a TC 745?
No. This form has been discontinued.
Do Classic Vehicles pay annual registration renewal fees?
Classic Vehicles are exempt from the standard renewal registration fees identified in Utah Code Section 41 1a 1206(1). Other annual charges may still apply, including applicable county fees such as the age based uniform assessment fee.
What is the registration fee for a newly registered Classic Vehicle?
The initial registration fee for a Classic Vehicle is $40. This initial fee does not apply when an existing registered vintage vehicle transitions to Classic Vehicle status.
Do Classic Vehicles still have emissions requirements?
No. They are exempt.
Are special group license plate contributions still waived for Classic Vehicles?
No. Classic Vehicles are not exempt from voluntary contributions associated with the historical support plate or another special group plate the owner chooses to display.
