Roadable Aircraft
Roadable aircraft are defined as an aircraft capable of taking off and landing from a suitable airfield and is also designed to be driven on a highway as a conveyance. Aircraft that can be driven on public roads will be required to be titled and registered. Customers must show proof of registration with UDOT’s Division of Aeronautics prior to title and registration.
Roadable aircraft are the only aircraft that are authorized to be titled and registered by the Motor Vehicle Division. Aircraft subject to registration are considered vehicles, and are subject to sales and use tax, which is collected by the Utah State Tax Commission.
A roadable aircraft is an aircraft that can take off and land from an airfield and can also be driven on a highway. Before it can be registered as a roadable aircraft, it must be registered as an aircraft with the FAA.
Title Requirements: FAA Certificate,or Registration from UDOT Department of Aeronautics Form TC-656, Utah Title Application. Please note, all owners listed on the application are required to provide government-issued identification. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspections, if being titled in Utah for the first time. See Form TC-661, Certificate of Inspection. (New vehicles sold by a Utah dealer are exempt)
Registration Requirements:
- Payment of age-based uniform fee
- Payment of registration fees
- Safety inspection on first-time registration
A plate will be issued and must be displayed when the aircraft is operated on the roads.

A roadable aircraft is subject to a safety inspection when the owner makes the initial application to register the roadable aircraft

Aircraft Registration

Aircraft subject to registration are considered vehicles, and are subject to sales and use tax. See Sales Tax on Aircraft for information. Sales Tax is paid on aircraft using form TC-828, Aircraft Sales and Use Tax Remittance Form.
