Special Group License Plates

Special group license plates are plates that generate funds for specific purposes or honor or recognize specific groups of people. Special group plates have different qualifications and fees for obtaining and renewing the plates, each described below. To obtain a special group plate, you must meet the qualifications and pay the required fees. Special group plates consist of a five-character combination on the right with the special group sticker on the left and a descriptive phrase on the bottom. Some special group plates can be personalized, as noted below.

To obtain a special plate by mail, please submit a copy of your current registration, any documentation required for the special plate, and a check that includes the cost of the special plate and/or donation fee, plus $3.00 for postage to:

Amateur Radio Operator

What is the purpose of this plate?

To identify those licensed to operate a fixed radio station in the State of Utah by the U.S. Government, and registering a vehicle in Utah.

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available only to those with a current FCC license to operate a fixed radio station in the State of Utah.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

There is a one-time fee of $13 (this includes postage and handling, special group and plate fees) to be paid when this plate is issued. This fee is in addition to other fees due and payable that may apply at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

Fees pertaining to the renewal of a vehicle registration apply and must be paid.

Can this plate be personalized?

No. The FCC assigned call letters, from four to six characters, determine the plate number.

Additional information
  • Plate may not be registered or renewed if owner ceases to maintain a current FCC license
  • Only one set of plates may be issued per qualified vehicle owner
  • When registering, the registrant must also include a copy of his/her current FCC license

Boy Scouts of America

What is the purpose of this plate?

To generate funds to be used for the benefit of programs of the Boy Scouts of America in the state of Utah.

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available to any vehicle owner registering a vehicle in Utah interested in displaying this plate and supporting this cause.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Vehicle owners pay an original contribution fee of at least $25 when this plate is issued. This is the required contribution to the Boy Scouts of America. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

Vehicle owners pay an additional annual contribution fee of at least $25 for each year this plate is renewed as part of the registration renewal process. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at time of renewal of the annual registration.

Can this plate be personalized?

Yes, it may be personalized with up to five characters, if that combination of characters is not already issued, and the selection meets DMV criteria for issuance.

Boys and Girls Clubs

What is the purpose of this plate?

To generate funds to be used to benefit the Utah Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Children's Issues

What is the purpose of this plate?

To generate funds to be used for the development and support of children's issues in Utah.

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available to any vehicle owner registering a vehicle in Utah interested in displaying this plate and supporting this cause.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Vehicle owners pay an annual contribution fee of at least $25 when this plate is issued. This is the required contribution to the Guardian Ad Litem Services or the Children's Museum of Utah. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

Vehicle owners pay an additional annual contribution fee of at least $25 for each year this plate is renewed as part of the registration renewal process. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at time of renewal of the annual registration.

Can this plate be personalized?

Clean Fuel – Clean Air (C Plate)

What is the purpose of this plate?

To identify vehicles that qualify for clean fuel vehicle designation.

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available only to those meeting the criteria of a clean fuel vehicle. You must first obtain a C Plate permit from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). You can find more information and apply for a C Plate permit on UDOT's website, http://www.udot.utah.gov/main/f?p=100:pg:3340177502713548:::1:T,V:2280 There is no cost to obtain a permit, but other fees must be paid at the time of registration, as noted below.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

  • Qualified vehicles properly displaying this plate may utilize high occupancy vehicle lanes as designated on the Utah freeway system.

Disabled Veterans

What is the purpose of this plate?

To identify and recognize Veterans who are disabled as a result of military service, with registered vehicles.
Please note: This plate does not qualify for parking in a disabled parking space. For a disabled parking permit, see "Disabled Plates and Placards".

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available only to Disabled Veterans as evidenced by military documentation contained in Veterans Administration Form 20-5455, or by a letter issued from a United States Military entity certifying that the person is disabled as a result of military service. If a disabled veteran does not have the proper documentation, they can make a request for the documentation from the Division of Veterans' Affairs at 1-800-827-1000.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

What is the purpose of this plate?

To identify and recognize those certified as emergency medical technicians (EMT).

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available only to qualified emergency medical technicians as evidenced by a certificate of EMT training.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Vehicle owners pay a one-time fee of $15 when this plate is issued (this includes special group, plate, registration and decal fees). This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

Fees pertaining to the renewal of a vehicle registration apply and must be paid.

Can this plate be personalized?

Farm Vehicle

What is the purpose of this plate?

To identify the qualified owner or operator of a farm truck used exclusively to transport farm products or supplies.

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available only to trucks meeting the definition of a farm truck and only to owners or operators of farms as defined in Utah law.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

There is a $15 fee to issue this plate (this includes special group, plate, registration and decal fees). This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

Fees pertaining to the renewal of a vehicle registration apply and must be paid.

Can this plate be personalized?

  • Restricted conditions of use apply to a truck displaying this plate.
  • Farm plates may be issued only to trucks.
  • Farm Trucks in Counties Requiring Emissions Tests
  • Trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 12,000 pounds are exempt from emissions testing requirements. If the truck has a gross vehicle weight rating of 12,000 pounds or less, the owner must obtain an emissions test exemption from the County Emissions Control Office. To qualify for the exemption, the applicant must:
  • Prove that he/she owns or operates a farm located on property classified as "green belt"; and,
  • Verify that the truck is used exclusively for agricultural purposes.

Firefighter

What is the purpose of this plate?

To identify and recognize currently employed, volunteer, or retired Utah firefighters.

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available only to qualified firefighters as evidenced by a current membership card from the Utah Firefighters Association, current picture identification, or a letter on letterhead from a fire department or governing entity.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Effective until July 1, 2009: Vehicle owners pay a one-time fee of $15 when this plate is issued (this includes special group, plate, registration and decal fees). This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Effective beginning July 1, 2009: Vehicle owners pay an original contribution fee of at least $15 when this plate is issued. This is the required contribution to the Firefighter Support Fund. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

Effective until July 1, 2009: Fees pertaining to the renewal of a vehicle registration apply and must be paid.

Effective beginning July 1, 2009: Vehicle owners pay an annual contribution fee of at least $15 for each year this plate is renewed as part of the registration renewal process. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time of renewal of the annual registration.

Can this plate be personalized?

Only actual firefighters are entitled to these plates. Investigators and inspectors are sworn firefighters and are eligible. Dispatchers, payroll coordinators, etc., are not eligible.

Former Prisoner of War

What is the purpose of this plate?

To identify and recognize Utah resident military veterans held as a prisoner of war and with currently registered vehicles.

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available to any Utah resident military veteran held as a prisoner of war as evidenced by military documentation contained in Form DD214 from the Veteran's Administration.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Vehicle owners pay a one-time fee of $15 when this plate is issued (this includes special group, plate, registration and decal fees). This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

Fees pertaining to the renewal of a vehicle registration apply and must be paid.

To recognize a recipient of a Gold Star award, issued to honor those who served in the Armed Forces of the United States and lost their lives while in service.

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is only available to a recipient of a Gold Star award as evidenced by military documentation.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

To generate funds to be used to support families of fallen Utah Highway Patrol troopers and other Department of Public Safety employees. This plate is available to any vehicle owner registering a vehicle in Utah interested in displaying this plate and supporting this cause.

Vehicle owners pay an annual contribution fee of at least $35 when this plate is issued. This is the required contribution to the Public Safety Honoring Heroes account. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

Vehicle owners pay an additional annual contribution fee of at least $35 for each year this plate is renewed as part of the registration renewal process. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at time of renewal of the annual registration.

National Guard

To identify current members of the Utah National Guard.

Pearl Harbor Survivor

To identify and recognize those on duty and surviving the attack at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941.

This plate is available only to those survivors with current membership in the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Vehicle owners pay an original contribution fee of at least $25 when this plate is issued. This is the required contribution to the Utah Association of Public School Foundations. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

This plate is available only to current members of official search and rescue teams. The owner must provide official current Search and Rescue membership card, current Search and Rescue picture identification badge, or provide a letter (on county sheriff letterhead) from the county sheriff, stating
that the applicant is a current Search and Rescue team member.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Vehicle owners pay a one-time fee of $15 when this plate is issued (this includes special group, plate, registration and decal fees). This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

What is the purpose of this plate?

To generate funds to be used for the benefit of snowmobile programs in Utah.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Vehicle owners pay an original contribution fee of at least $25 when this plate is issued. This is the required contribution to the Division of Parks and Recreation. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

There is no annual contribution fee to renew this plate. However, all other fees pertaining to the renewal of a vehicle registration apply and must be paid.

Vintage Vehicle

What is the purpose of this plate?

To identify a vintage vehicle as defined by Utah law. A vintage vehicle is defined as a motor vehicle that is 40 years old or older, from the current year, primarily a collector's item, and used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses, but is not used for general daily transportation.

Who may purchase this plate?

This plate is available only to vehicles at least 40 years old or older at the time of application for the plate.

Is there a fee to purchase this plate?

Vehicle owners pay a one-time $35.50 fee when this plate is issued. This fee is in addition to all other fees due at the time the plate is issued.

Is there an annual fee to renew this plate?

Fees pertaining to uniform property tax apply and must be paid.

Can this plate be personalized?

Yes, it may be personalized with up to five characters, if that combination of characters is not already issued, and the selection meets DMV criteria for issuance.
